Cellular adaptations
  • Hyperplasia is increase in number of cells. E.g: Prostatic hyperplasia
  • Hypertrophy is increase in size of the cells.  Muscular hypertrophy in body builders
  • Atrophy is decrease in size of the cell. E.g: Disuse atrophy
  • Metaplasia is change in epithelium from one type to another
  • Most common type of metaplasia – Columnar to squamous (In respiratory tract of smokers)
  • E.g: Epithelial cell metaplasia – Barrett’s esophagus (Change from squamous to intestinal type epithelium)
  • Connective tissue metaplasia – Myositis ossificans
