Cellular adaptations
Hyperplasia is increase in number of cells. E.g: Prostatic hyperplasia
Hypertrophy is increase in size of the cells. Muscular hypertrophy in body builders
Atrophy is decrease in size of the cell. E.g: Disuse atrophy
Metaplasia is change in epithelium from one type to another
Most common type of metaplasia – Columnar to squamous (In respiratory tract of smokers)
E.g: Epithelial cell metaplasia – Barrett’s esophagus (Change from squamous to intestinal type epithelium)
Connective tissue metaplasia – Myositis ossificans
